Advanced Module Choices: How to Rank your Choices on the University App

On this page are the Instructions for ranking your Year 3 and 4 Advanced Module choices on the University App.  Each type of degree has different instructions so please read your instructions carefully.  You will be sent the link to the App on Monday of week 8 (24th of February). Instructions for BSc Students who are not taking Clinical Modules:

Next year you need to do two advanced modules in each term, one from Cluster A and one from Cluster B.  On the App you will rank the choice for both Clusters for Autumn and Spring Term.  The “Applications of Forensic Psychology” and The Neurobiology of Depression (David Pitcher) modules are available in both terms. You can make the "Applications of Forensic Psychology" your first choice for Cluster A (or B in for he The Neurobiology of Depression) in the Autumn term and Cluster A in Spring term (for both).  You will only the do the course once obviously and you will be allocated a module in the other term from your choices from Cluster A (so be careful what you put as first and second for each term).  You don’t have to and if there is a particular course that you want to do in Cluster A in either term it might make sense to put that as your first choice.  The “Forensic Psychology in Practice” course is open to all but only runs once in Cluster B of Spring term, so places are more limited.

There may be the option to do a new course on Cognitive Anomalies, Decision-making, and Democracy in Philosophy. Psychology will be contributing to it, and we are looking into getting approval for psychology students to do it.  It won't be on the App for you to choose.  If you would like to do the course just email paul.bishop@york.ac.uk and we will put you down as interested in the course. The course is in Spring term, so still pick a Cluster A option and a Cluster B Option from the list on the App.  If we get permission for students to do the course, we'll ask you to pick which Psychology option you would like to do and register you on the Philosophy module.  Details of the module are here:

https://www.york.ac.uk/students/studying/manage/programmes/module-catalogue/module/PHI00119H/2020-21

Instructions for BSc Students who are taking Clinical Modules:

You need to choose two advanced modules one from each term (this is in addition to your two Clinical Modules).  We asked you by email to say which Cluster you wish to do your Clinical Modules for each term.  We have allocated you to a Cluster for your Clinical modules for each term based on those preferences.  We have attached a spreadsheet with the allocation of which Cluster you will do the Clinical Course in each term.

This spreadsheet is here.  Your allocation should be beside your email address.  If you have an issue with the Clinical Module Cluster allocation please get it in touch as with Paul Bishop (paul.bishop@york.ac.uk) as soon as possible.

When you see the form, you will see that you can tick a box that says you don’t want to choose a course from a Cluster.  Click that box for the Cluster in each term that you are doing a Clinical Course.  So for example, if you have been allocated Cluster A for “Clinical Psychology and Applications of CBT” in the Autumn term you click the box on Cluster A that says you don’t want to choose modules from that cluster for that term. Then you can indicate your preference for your second module in Autumn term by ranking the choices in Cluster B.  You then do the same for the Spring Term.

Instructions for MSci Students on the Forensic MSci

You need to choose two advanced modules one from each term. On the App you will need to choose one module from the whole list for each term. You will complete the Applications of Forensic Psychology in Autumn Term and Forensic Psychology in Practice in Spring Term.  So that these modules are on the system for you place the two Forensic modules as the last choice on the system.  You are set to do these courses so don’t worry but you need to rank them to complete the form.

Instructions for MSci Students on the Clinical/Developmental pathway MSci:

You need to do one advanced module in each term.  Therefore, you will need to rank all the modules on each terms list when you go on the App.

Instructions for MSci Students on the Neuroscience pathway MSci

You need to do one advanced module in each term.  Therefore, you will need to rank all the modules on each terms list on the App.

There is the option of completing a module "Programming in Neuroimaging" in your 3rd year.  This module would replace one of your Advanced Modules.   The course covers programming in the Python programming language and its use in scientific environments including stimulus presentation and data analysis.  The PiN module is a challenging module which may be very different to courses which you have previously studied during your degree and may not be suitable for all students.  The PiN module spans both the Autumn and Spring terms and we suggest that students who take the module consider taking their other module during the Autumn term rather than the Spring term.

The detail on the course is here:

https://www.york.ac.uk/students/studying/manage/programmes/module-catalogue/module/PSY00046M/2019-20

If you have questions about the PiN module, please get in touch with the module leader; Mark Hymers <mark.hymers@ynic.york.ac.uk>.

If you want to do this course, just rank the courses on the system as normal and then email Louise Ward (louise.ward@york.ac.uk) to say that you would like to do the programming course.  We will be in touch in the last week of term to make sure we have your choices correct.

If you are on the Neuroscience and Neuroimaging MSci pathway, there is one other option that you can choose.  This is “Programming in Neuroimaging".  The course covers programming in the Python programming language and its use in scientific environments including stimulus presentation and data analysis.  The PiN module is a challenging module that may be very different to courses which you have previously studied during your degree and may not be suitable for all students.  The PiN module spans both the Autumn and Spring Terms and we suggest that students who take the module consider taking their other module during the Autumn term rather than the Spring term.  If you wish to chat about the course, you can contact the course director, Mark Hymers mark.hymers@ynic.york.ac.uk.  The detail on the course is here:
