These sites are built over or at the site of a significant archaeological excavation. This gives them a different sense of immediacy in comparison to a city museum or experimental archaeopark.

Excavation-based centres may have features of either or both a museum or archaeopark but tend to present the material differently as they have a more direct connection to the archaeological recovery of the material and often are perceived as being more directly connected to the past. Although most of such sites had some sort of excavation on the site I am also including rock art sites in this category. This category of heritage sites has been selected for particular analysis as it directly relates to the Jorvik Viking Centre and to the possibilities for presentations at Star Carr.
