Dear all

So the great unlocking starts this weekend.  However, whilst things are not
changing yet at the University there is a suggestion that some buildings
may open in September.  In the meantime we have key data management staff
going into the building to keep the data services ticking over: a big
thanks to you for this.

On the hedgehog front some more videos have appeared.  Heather Leggett
obviously has the Usain Bolt of the hedgehog world living in her garden!
See the video and be amazed at its speed.  I=E2=80=99ve decided that our sm=
all hog
must be a teenager as it has all the attributes of one: noisey eating
habits and licking its lips after feeding.  Catherine Hewitt allegedly has
footage, filmed by her son, of mother and baby hog wandering around her
kitchen =E2=80=93 not on the hedgehog page yet!  Whilst I=E2=80=99m a fan o=
f nature having
the local wildlife roaming around your house is taking it a bit far.
Although I remember as a child waking up one day to find a horse stuck in
our kitchen.

At our recent SMT meeting Sally kindly produced a summary of our grants so
far this year.  From the first of January to end of June we submitted 30
grants with an overall value of about =C2=A325 million with 17 still in the
process of being worked up for funding.  Two so far have been awarded with
two going forward into a full application.  Looking at the titles of the
submitted proposals and ones in development there is a huge variety ranging
from our =E2=80=98usual=E2=80=99 surgical type bids, old friends such as wo=
und
care/prevention to methods pieces (increasing uptake of ethnic minority
participation in RCTs), to a number of education grants. Such a broad range
is one of our strengths as it avoids us having a lull in grant activity.

I hope people are still managing to work fine from home and not getting
Zoomed out.  I=E2=80=99ve noticed some staff are now bringing their pets to=
 the
meetings with Rachel Cummingham-Burley=E2=80=99s cat appearing at every rec=
ent Zoom
I=E2=80=99ve been to. Mind you a young man had a huge dinosaur at a recent =
Zoom
meeting.

I=E2=80=99m taking some time off next week to set an example of taking leav=
e during
lockdown.  We will probably go for days out with and without the Helpful
Son (who managed at the weekend to jam my car boot with his coat).  When I
showed him Belen=E2=80=99s video of her son making Spanish cuisine the Help=
ful Son
decided not to be put to shame by Belen=E2=80=99s son=E2=80=99s culinary ge=
nius and made
some home made cheese.  The useful parent took one look and decided she
wasn=E2=80=99t having any, the Helpful Son=E2=80=99s girlfriend thought the=
 same so the
three of them decided I should eat it on the basis that I don=E2=80=99t hav=
e a well
developed sense of taste and smell and wouldn=E2=80=99t notice the full hor=
ror.
However, given that the three of them were looking very suspicious in the
kitchen I took a pass on cheese.
