Dear all

I hope you are all faring well at the end of the second week of lock down I
know some are feeling unwell and I hope you recover soon.

I appreciate how difficult it is for some of you who have caring
responsibilities and are having to juggle work with family support.   In a
couple of teleconferences we=E2=80=99ve had a few younger people joining us=
 with
one young lady looking quite splendid in her fairy outfit.  An issue
related to this is I know some people can=E2=80=99t work the number of hour=
s they
did previously due to caring responsibilities.  It would be helpful if you
could discuss with your line manager how many hours a week you can
realistically manage =E2=80=93 thanks.  This is just for planning purposes =
there
will be *no* expectation that you would reduce your contractual hours so
pay would remain unaffected.

I also understand that some people are expecting contract renewals.  These
have been delayed by around two weeks =E2=80=93 there isn=E2=80=99t any sug=
gestion that I
know of that they won=E2=80=99t be renewed the delay is, I suspect, due to =
workload
issues in HR.

The SMT met and we discussed the current situation.  As you will know the
University has put a temporary halt to new appointments, which means that
for some projects that need to be set up we may have to ask existing staff
to contribute.  The University also is going to allow up to 10 days of
leave to transfer into the next leave year, which is positive.  I=E2=80=99v=
e been
in contact with Karl and the Department will add some additional
flexibility to carrying over leave into next year as long as there is only
10 carry over days left beyond Christmas.  I wrote earlier in the week
about leave in Aug/Sept can we also ensure, however, that whole teams are
not away at the same time next year please.  A difficulty that has been
flagged up is getting sign off for the SOECAT form before grant submissions
=E2=80=93 hopefully they suspend this during the crisis.

You should have seen the email saying that the University has got Zoom now,
which in my experience seems to work better for larger meetings than
alternatives such as google hangouts.

It is a stressful time particularly for those who are living alone =E2=80=
=93 I
would encourage you to contact colleagues for a chat, as I do, to let of
steam and generally have a catch up.
