We also received several powerful emails from students and staff members. Following further discussion with members of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee and Departmental Management Team, we thought it important to make a statement on our position and how we intend to move the debate on. This statement will also be shared with students. The Department of Health Sciences remains committed to tackling racism. As we know, recent events are influenced by past injustices and oppression, which, as a society we have failed to address and change. Racism has root causes in colonialism and slavery. While colonialism and slavery may have ceased to exist in their original forms, the current social, political, cultural, economic and environmental context means that in many countries - including the UK - racism persists in more subtle forms. Consequently, a pernicious and entrenched institutional racism continues to create social injustice. This has real consequences for people's lives. There are no easy solutions, particularly since many of these issues are longstanding. This is why it is important not to be complacent. We all have a responsibility to challenge racism, in what every guise it may take. This commitment is the only way we will achieve positive change. Challanging discrimination is a never ending task and although progress may be slower than we would like, it is important not to lose sight of its value or be overwhelmed by the problems we face. Our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Committee will continue to drive strategy and work on various initiatives, to ensure diversity, inclusion and equality are embedded in Departmental activities. As part of this work, the Committee is proposing a virtual forum, to debate current issues. We encourage you to be part of the discussion. We would also be interested in your views on how we continue this debate to ensure equality of opportunity can become more aligned to equality of outcome.
