Open Research at York events fortnight (7-17 May 2024)
Join members of the York research community at the end of semester for an exciting and inspiring series of open research aligned events. The programme covers a diverse set of practices, topics and formats including training workshops, discussion groups and research showcases. These events aim to be collaborative and accessible, with relevance to researchers at different levels and across disciplines. Most sessions will take place in-person at locations around campus and are open to all students, PGRs and staff at York.
The events series also coincides with the announcement of this year’s Open Research Awards recipients. The awards scheme is open for submissions until 22 April and provides an opportunity to celebrate projects and initiatives across all disciplines which engage with, reflect upon, or advocate for open research practices and principles.

Tuesday 7 May, 12.30-2pm | Writing lay summaries with AI assistance | This interactive session for staff and PGRs will be co-led by the Building Research and Innovation Capacity (BRIC) and Digital Inclusion, Skills and Creativity (DISC) teams, and will focus on how to craft accessible writing for non-specialist audiences and how to use AI tools to further examine, simplify and strengthen the key message of your research.

Thursday 9 May, 12.30-2pm | White Rose University Press: our open access university press | A discussion event aimed at academic colleagues focusing on author experiences of publishing with White Rose University Press, the University of York's academic press, and the values and challenges of open access book publication. | ||
Thursday 9 May, 2-3pm | What is open research and why does it matter? | An online BRIC workshop led by the Open Research team will provide an introductory overview of open research practices and principles for staff and PGRs, including how open research is supported at York and where further help and guidance can be found.

Wednesday 15 May, 12-2pm | ReproducibiliTea Journal Club - Reflecting on open research: how far have we come? | An informal discussion reflecting on the prevalence of open research practices in Psychology and other disciplines over tea, coffee and cake. ReproducibiliTea York is a grassroots initiative led by ECRs from the Psychology Open Science Interest Group, but this session is open to researchers from all areas. | ||
Thursday 16 May, 9.30-4.30pm | UK Data Service: Coding in public - barriers to reproducibility | This workshop dives into what reproducibility is in the context of social science and data research, as well as exploring what greater reproducibility might achieve in these research areas. This interactive session is led by the UK Data Service (UKDS) and is aimed at researchers in the Social Sciences faculty who are concerned with inequitable barriers to reproducible research for underrepresented or excluded populations. | ||
Friday 17 May, 12-2pm | Open access publishing enquiry clinic | A drop-in support clinic for any book or journal publishing enquiries, facilitated by the Open Research team. No need to register, just come along between 12-2pm. |
